At this point, I’ve tried well over 100 pairs of sneakers (in the name of science, of course!). From the best platform sneakers to the best sneakers for arch support to the best walking shoes for women, I’ve laced up countless styles. Two Brooks shoes topped podiatrists’ and trainers’ lists time and time again, which left me wondering how the pairs stacked up in a toe-to-toe comparison (pun intended). So, I tested Brooks Ghost vs. Adrenaline to see which is better.

Specifically, I tested the Brooks Adrenaline GTS 24 and the Brooks Ghost 16, both the latest models of the storied kicks.

The Ghost 16 offers the reliable support of the Ghost series (which includes other iterations like the Ghost Max and weatherized versions), but gets some updates (more on this later). The shoe still boasts major stability, soft cushioning (but not overly cushioned), and easy transitions (each stride feels natural).

The Adrenaline GTS (now on iteration 24 and available in weatherized options) also gets some newness while continuing to provide major stability, cushioning, and amazing support, similar to the Ghost. The follow-through feels natural with each step, but this shoe provides a bit more cushion.

Ghost vs. Adrenaline differences

Fit and design

The lightest iteration of the Adrenaline style, the GTS 24s weigh in at just 8.8 ounces. They feature a roomy (but not overly so) toe box and the brand’s signature GuideRails support, which helps the body move naturally without allowing for excess movement. This style also offers a bit more support compared to the Ghost 16. It’s best for road running and walking.

A true road shoe, the Ghost 16 is even lighter than the Adrenaline GTS 24, at just 8.5 ounces. These offer a great ground feel for those looking to really experience the follow-through with each step. The brand notes that these are ideal for walking (I love these as walking shoes!) and road running. It boasts the American Podiatric Medical Association Seal of Acceptance too.

These feature an enhanced air mesh upper that offers stretch and structure, with the breathability mesh is known for. I've tested these extensively—in fact, check out my Ghost 16 sneaker review to learn more

Cushioning

New for the Adrenaline style, Brooks added its nitrogen-infused DNA LOFT v3 foam that provides ample cushion without feeling like you’re bouncing with each step. And it’s lightweight (again, just 8.8 oz), making each stride comfortable and sure.

The Ghost 16 also touts updated cushioning, but slightly less when compared to the Adrenaline GTS 24 (and you can see this in the sole of the shoe). These feature the same nitrogen-infused DNA Loft v3 cushioning as the Adrenaline style.

Stability

The Adrenaline GTS 24 is marketed as the more stable shoe, with its GuidRails technology (which the brand says helps reduce extra movement) at the forefront of this.

Though listed as a more neutral shoe, in my book, the Ghost 16s feel stable and rigid too. A soft midsole and segmented crash pad really allow you to feel your entire stride with each step, allowing for a more centered, grounded feeling. The snug upper ensures you feel secure.

How we compared Ghost vs. Adrenaline

I tested both shoes for a minimum of four weeks, ensuring I used each for the same exercises to get a real comparison. I even wore one of each at one point (though only walking) to see how they compared.

These sneakers have seen me through countless miles walking across Manhattan and Brooklyn, beginning my running journey on a treadmill (I tried both styles to see how they compared outside versus indoors), and some mileage on pavement.

The final verdict

In my book, the Adrenaline GTS 24 outperforms the Ghost 16. The support, v4 foam sole, and slightly snugger toe box all work to feel secure on my feet, ensuring I follow through without clenching my toes. The Ghost 16 is a great walking shoe, but I prefer more cushion and less ground feel for running.
