FAQ

Which is better mechanical or fixed broadheads?

When it comes to choosing the best crossbow broadheads you constantly hear the mechanical vs fixed blade argument. I don’t think one is necessarily better than the other. They both have their place and everyone has their opinion on which to go with. It’s hard to beat the accuracy of a mechanical or expandable broadhead. With their low profile, sleek design they tend to fly true just like a field point.

With a mechanical broadhead you generally get a bigger cutting diameter as well but they offer less penetration than a fixed blade. If you are hunting bigger animals and need that extra penetration, then you should opt for a fixed blade. If you are hunting denser timber like here in Eastern NC were a good blood trail is needed to recover the animal then a mechanical will be the better option.

How heavy of a broadhead should I shoot?

This is really up to the shooter and what they are hunting. If you are looking to gain as much speed as you can from your crossbow, then you should stay on the lighter side with the 100 grain broadheads. If you are hunting bigger animals like hogs for example and need that hard hitting knock down power, then consider going toward the 125 grain or 150 grain broadhead and pairing this with a heavier crossbow bolt. This will allow for extra penetration and to bust through bone easier.

Are crossbow broadheads different than compound bow broadheads?

The main difference in crossbow broadheads vs compound bow broadheads is the crossbow version generally is a bit beefier, have thicker ferrules and the mechanical’s have stronger means for retaining blades during flight. This is because crossbows are shooting much faster. You can shoot crossbow broadheads out of a compound bow with no problem, however we recommend shooting crossbow specific broadheads out of the higher speed crossbows which is anything over 400 fps.

Can you reuse and resharpen crossbow broadheads?

You absolutely can. There are lots of broadhead sharpening kits out there. With mechanical broadheads you are generally better off replacing the blades but with fixed blade you can sharpen shoot and resharpen.

We always recommend inspecting your broadheads thoroughly after shooting them to ensure they are still spinning with out any wobble and there are no cracks in the blade or ferrule. Remember even when pulling your broadheads out of a brand new package to check and make sure they are truly sharp. Lots of broadheads need to be touched up before hand as they are not as sharp they the manufacturer claims them to be.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the best crossbow broadheads is a very personal thing and comes down to what and where you’re hunting. Every person has a different opinion on what they determine is “best”.

The best thing we can recommend is try them out yourself. If possible, buy a few different broadheads prior to the season and shoot them to see which perform and fly best from your crossbow.

Remember you can read a million different articles on which are the best crossbow broadheads on the market but when it comes down to it, collecting real life data yourself with your equipment always yields the best results in which are the best crossbow broadheads for you and your setup. Good luck this hunting season!
